High school teacher commits suicide in Nyamira

Nyamira High School Principal George Onkundi.

Nyamira Boys High School fraternity was enshrouded in a deep shock yesterday after learning about the untimely death of one of their teachers.

According to Nyamira Central area chief Samson Magare, the body of the deceased was found hanging from the ceiling of his rental house next to the school gate.

Information from the school principal George Onkundi revealed that the teacher did not report to work, and he could not answer the frantic calls they made.

“We became impatient and made a follow up to his house where we found it locked from inside,” said one of the teachers.

When they forced the door open, they found that he had hanged himself with a bed sheet from the ceiling of the house.

The police took the body to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

The principal identified the teacher before the police as Kevin Omwenga, a teacher of Mathematics and Chemistry.

Onkundi described the late teacher who has served in the school for four years under the Board of School Management (BoM) as hard working and loved his students.

The deceased leaves behind a young widow and an infant of two months.
