Grief engulfs village after Form 1 student drowns in River Nzoia

Residents of Bonde ‘A’ village in Ugenya sub county are full of with grief and agony after a Form One student drowned in the waters of River Nzoia on Monday evening.

Nancy Akinyi, who was admitted as a Form One student at Siginga Mixed Secondary school one week ago, met her untimely death while attempting to swim in the river.

According to Sifuyo East Assistant Chief Mr. Edward Okoth, the deceased had gone to wash clothes together with her friends and that she had just finished washing her clothes and decided to swim while waiting for the rest to finish.

He said that it was at that point that she got overwhelmed by the moving waters and drowned as the friends watched helplessly.

Mr. Okoth said that the children raised alarm which attracted members of the public who immediately informed the provincial administration and the police.

The administrator said that they rushed to the scene and immediately employed the services of the local divers who searched for the body and luckily managed to recover it after about fifteen minutes.

While confirming the incident, the Assistant Chief stated that the body of the 16-year-old girl has since been removed to Ukwala Sub County Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.
