Grief engulfs Kisii’s Ndonyo Secondary as Form 4 student who died in road accident is buried

Grief and sorrow on Wednesday, May 27, engulfed Ndonyo Secondary School and Kebabe Village in Etago Sub-county as family, friends, teachers, and students gathered to bury Patrick Ratumo, a Form Four student who died in a tragic road accident along the Eberege–Nyagancha road.

The 19-year-old student lost his life after a boda boda reportedly lost control, killing him instantly. His sudden death has left the school community devastated, with many describing him as a disciplined and hardworking student whose future was full of promise.

Emotions ran high during the burial ceremony held on Wednesday at Kebabe Village, as students from Ndonyo Secondary School broke down in tears while paying their final respects to their classmate. Teachers and fellow students remembered Ratumo as a humble and determined young man who was dedicated to his studies and maintained good relations with those around him.

The tragedy came barely a week after the school held its Education and Prize Giving Day ceremony, an occasion meant to celebrate academic excellence and student achievement. His absence during the event was deeply felt by classmates and teachers.

School officials, local leaders, and residents who attended the burial ceremony, led by prayers from Pr. Nixon Matara, called for increased caution and improved road safety measures along the Eberege–Nyagancha road, noting that many students use the route daily.

“Patrick was a young man with great potential. Losing him in such a tragic manner is painful to all of us,” one teacher said during the ceremony.

Residents of Kebabe Village and the wider Etago Sub-county joined the Ratumo family in mourning, describing his death as a huge loss to the community and the school.

Patrick Ratumo will be remembered as a dedicated student whose dreams were cut short too soon.
