Grade Three learners to be assessed in September

Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) will access learners in Grade 3 to monitor learners’ achievement.

The assessment will be done in September 16 and 20 as part of Competency Based Curriculum according to KNEC CEO, Mercy Karogo.

She said that a Kenya Early Years Assessment (KEYA) portal to register the learners has been developed.

“Online registration system is scheduled for between July 1 and August 30 2019 and data used from the portal will be from National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) to enable head teachers identify their learners,” she said.

The guidelines, instructions and assessment tools have been developed and will be uploaded to school portals. Head teachers will be expected to download and produce copies for all learners in their schools.

“Assessment materials will be handed over to the class teachers’ as per the timetable. The teachers will then mark, score and upload the marks to the KNEC portal,” she added.

According to Kagora, KNEC will analyze the scores and then compile a report to be released in October.

Kagora was speaking at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development where KNEC and the Ministry of Education launched a stakeholder sensitization and engagement campaign on this year’s national examinations.

About 1,088,986 candidates have been registered in 27,809 centres for this year’s KCPE exams.

Karogo also said that the 2,423 registered students with special needs will have their assessment conducted between July 1 and 26 to determine the nature of assistance to be given during the exams.
