Govt launches 5th cohort of RPL assessments for over 400 artisans in Trans Nzoia

Artisans undergo skills assessment at Kitale National Polytechnic under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme aimed at validating practical expertise for formal certification.

More than 400 informal sector artisans are set to undergo assessment for certification under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme at Kitale National Polytechnic.

The RPL programme is designed to validate and formally recognise the skills and competencies individuals have acquired outside the traditional classroom—often through years of practical experience—yet remain undocumented by formal academic qualifications.

For many, this lack of paperwork has been a barrier to formal employment, higher education, or business opportunities.

The certification process is jointly overseen by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).

Both institutions are spearheading this government-backed initiative to tap into Kenya’s vast pool of skilled but uncertified workers, helping to integrate them into the formal employment sector.

RPL is a worldwide framework adopted in Kenya to formally acknowledge skills and knowledge acquired outside traditional education, such as through work experience, apprenticeships, or informal training.

In Kenya, it is spearheaded by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) to integrate skilled but uncertified individuals into the formal economy.
