The government has allocated Ksh741 million and 30 acres of Kenyatta University (KU) land for the establishment of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Emergency Operations and Logistics Hub.

This comes as a surprise for many considering that in 2022, KU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Paul Wainaina and the University Council were suspended for refusing to surrender the varsity’s title deed to facilitate the acquisition as directed by the then Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua.

In the letter dated July 7, 2022, the VC was asked to submit a letter of authority from the University as the holder of the title to enable the Ministry of Lands to enter the disputed premises and carry out physical planning as well as submit a revised Master Plan to consider in excision of the land.

The then Council informed the government that they lacked the authority to allocate land without following proper procedures.

According to the letter, the university was required to allocate 30 acres to the WHO Centre, 10 acres to the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, 180 acres to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital and another 190 acres for resettlement of Kamae squatters.

Prof. Wainana was later reinstated by Dr. William Ruto when he became the President and a new Council appointed.
