Governor condemns the killing of a young man in Makueni

Makueni governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has condemned the killing of a young man during demos in Emali on Wednesday.

The killing happened when Azimio demonstrators engaged in running battles with the police.

Brian Muendo was allegedly shot dead by police near their home in Poster Estate along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Mutula said the young man was not in the demos and had just stepped out of their house when the bullet hit him, killing him on the spot.

He disclosed that the 18-year-old had done his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education last year and was waiting to join Kenyatta University this September.

The governor said it was sad for the young man to have his dreams cut off in such a manner.

He called for the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to take action on the officer who fired the bullet that killed Muendo.

“This bright soul was due to join Kenyatta University!

Our security officers have a duty to maintain law and order.

Article 37 of the Constitution is unequivocal. It says every person has the right, peaceably and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, to picket, and to present petitions to public authorities.” he said in a letter to IPOA.

“I call upon the Independent IPOA to promptly investigate the culpable officers and bring those responsible to account.

I wish those injured quick recovery,” he added.
