Government plans to decentralize NYS training to VTCs

The national government is planning to revolutionize National Youth Service (NYS) training by decentralizing its service to the grass root Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) in the villages.

This is to be done through a strategic collaboration with counties to strengthen NYS trainings and boost more trainers in the grass root with handy skills.

Under the partnership, the national government will equip the VCTs with the necessary materials and courses offered at the NYS, ensuring there is a standardized training to all recruits regardless of where they are based.

“The plan is to combine the NYS and the Vocational Training Centre to offer similar training… we want to see the good NYS training spread across the country,” said Public Service, Performance and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria.

According to the CS, the aim of the move is to increase the number of NYS recruits, with a target of 100,000 by year 2027.

Kuria, who was speaking during an inspection tour of VCTs in Nakuru County, emphasized the importance of integrating NYS trainings into VCTs, saying there are plans to rename these institutions to reflect their new mandate.

The CS further said that he will engage all governors to work with his ministry to roll out the plans.

Apart from this programme providing NYS training, this partnership will also facilitate the government’s agenda of improving ICT infrastructure across the country, as each centre will be equipped with ICT hub to provide youth access to online job opportunities.
