Gladys Masai named acting CEO at CEMASTEA as Jacinta Akatsa retires

The Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) has announced the appointment of Gladys Masai as its new Chief Executive Officer in an acting capacity, following the retirement of long‑serving head  Jacinta Akatsa.

Masai, who has been serving as Director of STEM Research and Innovation at the institution, takes over leadership of the semi‑autonomous government agency under the Ministry of Education. Akatsa officially handed over to her successor at CEMASTEA’s headquarters in Karen, Nairobi, during a ceremony overseen by the organisation’s Board of Governors.

CEMASTEA plays a central role in strengthening science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Kenya and across Africa. Its mandate includes capacity building for educators, in‑service training for teachers, and advancing research and innovation to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

The leadership transition marks a significant moment for the organisation, which has been instrumental in promoting STEM education and supporting teachers with modern pedagogical skills. Masai’s appointment is expected to ensure continuity while also introducing new strategies to expand CEMASTEA’s regional impact.
