A panic mode as engulfed Gacharage Girls Secondary School in Kandara Constituency, Murang’a County after a fire broke out at a dormitory on the eve of Friday morning, triggering fear among students and residents as emergency teams rushed to contain the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, with authorities saying investigations will begin once the situation is fully brought under control.
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata confirmed that all students had been safely evacuated and accounted for, easing fears of casualties following the incident.
“Murang’a County Fire and Rescue teams are on site and actively battling the fire alongside local community responders,” the governor said in a statement.

He added that the safety of students, school staff, and nearby residents remained the county government’s immediate priority, noting that emergency evacuation protocols had been activated promptly after the fire erupted.
The incident comes barely 24 hours after a deadly fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Senior Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where 16 students lost their lives in a dormitory inferno, raising renewed concerns over fire safety standards in schools across the country.
Authorities are expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine the extent of damage and establish the cause of the Gacharage Girls fire once firefighters fully contain the situation.
