Expenditure for education sector increased in 2023/24 Financial Year

The government has noted that the total expenditure for the education sector grew drastically in the current 2023/2024 financial year.

According to the economic survey report 2024 conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the total expenditure for education rose by 23.9 per cent to Ksh689.6 billion in 2023/24 from Ksh556.5 billion in 2022/23.

Total recurrent expenditure shot up by 23.3 per cent to Ksh655.6 billion in 2023/24, accounting for 95.1 per cent of the total expenditure for the education sector.

The report, which is produced once annually, revealed that the expenditure for Teachers Service Commission (TSC) increased by 14.7 per cent to Ksh342.4 billion in 2023/24, accounting for 52.2 per cent of the expenditure for the education sector recorded in 2022/2023.

Also, the report revealed that the expenditure for the State Department for Higher Education and Research rose by 48.6 per cent to Ksh151.0 billion in 2023/24.

The expenditures for State Department for Vocational and Technical Training and State Department for Basic Education increased by 28.6 per cent and 22.5 per cent to Ksh25.8 billion and Ksh136.4 billion respectively in 2023/24.

The survey revealed that the total development expenditure for the education sector increased by 37.4 per cent from Ksh24.7 billion in 2022/23 to Ksh34.0 billion in 2023/24. Development expenditure for the State Department of Basic Education increased by 21.8 per cent to Ksh22.1 billion in 2023/24, accounting for 65.2 per cent of the development expenditure for the education sector recorded in the 2022/2023 financial year.

Development expenditure for TSC increased by 46.6 per cent to Ksh1.2 billion in 2023/24 while development expenditure for the State Department for Vocational and Technical Training tripled from Ksh2.2 billion in 2022/23 to Ksh7.1 billion in 2023/24.
