Education Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Ms Mumina Bonaya has assured Nyeri residents that the government will support all children from poor backgrounds who sat the 2020 KCPE to transit to secondary level.

According to the CAS, the government would ensure a hundred per cent transition from primary to secondary is attained.

“Fees problem will not prevent young girls and boys from accessing secondary school education. The government will ensure all children from poor backgrounds get financial assistance,” she said.

She was speaking after she visited informal settlements of Witemere and Majengo slums in Nyeri town to find out the background of students who applied and were shortlisted for Elimu scholarship.

The vetting committee indicated that they selected 64 students in Nyeri County to benefit from the Elimu Scholarship. They however maintained that the rest of the applicants would be catered for by other available bursaries.

In total, the committee said they received 169 applications for the scholarship within Nyeri.

The CAS praised Elimu Scholarship Vetting Committee saying they have done a good job by ensuring that all the students get financial consideration.

“Elimu Scholarship is a government programme aimed at assisting bright but needy children from informal settlements,” the CAS explained

She said the scholarship is not the only support given,  adding that the government has other forms of bursaries that could assist in payment of school fees, She encouraged parents to seek fees assistance for their children from the government and other well-wishers.
