Early Childhood and Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Elgeyo Marakwet County have been awarded a pay rise in a bid to motivate them and ensure quality in service delivery.
The salaries of the teachers in three job groups have been adjusted upwards on a flat rate of KSh18,000 per grade. This will see the highest paid teacher take home KSh14000 and the least pocketing KSh14000.
Speaking during the annual state of the county address in the county assesmby, the Governor Wisley Rotich said the move was arrived at given the role the teachers perform in shaping the education foundation in the county.
He further said plans are underway to confirm more teachers and increase the pay by similar amount in the next financial year calling on the members of county assembly to pass the bill when presented to the house for approval.
“To motivate our ECDE teachers, we adjusted their salaries upwards by KSh4000 ensuring that the first, second and third cohorts earn KSh18000, KSh16, 000 and KSh1400 respectively. In the Financial Year 2024/25 we shall increase their take home by another KSh4000,” he told the assembly.

Rotich at the same time reported that the county had disbursed KSh15 million as capitation to ECDE in nine wards of the county aimed at facilitating running of the units including feeding programmes which he said aimed at attracting and retaining learners as well as supplementing diet to the young ones.
On technical education, the Governor said enrollment in Vocational Training Centres had registered an upward increase of students owing to the county plan of providing skills to the youth. He said the institutions have a student population of 3800 up from 1090 in 2022.
The governor further told the assembly that over 100 students have been sent to various Universities and colleges abroad under the county’s student airlift programme dubbed pepea.
He remarked, “Under our student airlift programme, pepea, we have managed to send over 100 students to various colleges and universities abroad. These include students who secured full athletics and academic scholarships in different colleges in the US and Canada”.
