Egerton retrenches 400 employees as Covid-19 bites

By Staff Reporter

As the Covid-19 takes a toll on the economy, Egerton University has revealed plans to retrench over 400 employees amid financial crunch.

However, the move has received approval from the University Council scaling down the institution’s salary cost by Sh. 39 million shillings per month.

Previously, the university’s payroll budget stood at Sh. 464.4 million per year hence handling it in the trying times of economic impotence that resulted from the Covid-19 has become a tall order for the institution.

According to the Vice-Chancellor Prof Rose Mwoya, the institution has requested the government to give them Sh589.7 million shillings to fund the exercise.

The VC cited that the university has not been in a position to generate revenue internally since the closure of learning institutions in March this year to avert the spread of the Covid-19.

On the other hand, the Universities Academic Staff Union Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga has written to the university demanding immediate payment of academic staff salaries citing that the Covid-19 pandemic has not hit Egerton University alone.
