Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has appointed four members to the Council of Nakuru-based Egerton University through a Gazette notice.

The appointees are Christopher Oanda, Gideon Koske, Brendo Kokoti Lubisia and Charles N. Njenga.

Egerton University has been grappling with managerial issues and claims of mismanagement of resources, on account of which in December last year, the VC and eight Council members were jailed for 30 days.

This was after the Employment and Labour Relations Court found them guilty of contempt of court for disobeying a May 30, 2022, order to pay lecturers full salaries.

“The management did not engage the lecturers in a move to resolve the matter. No evidence has been brought in court to show the management has goodwill,” the court pronounced in its verdict.

The roles of a University Council include
employing staff, approving the statutes of the university and causing them to be published in the Kenya Gazette, approving the policies of the university, and approving budgets.

In public universities, the council recommends the appointment of the Vice Chancellors (VCs) and principals of constituent colleges through a competitive process, and undertakes other functions set out under the Universities Act 2012 and the Charter.
