State Department for Devolution Principal Secretary (PS) Teresia Mbaika has thrown her support behind the government’s directive to pay school fees through the eCitizen platform.

“If it works for us, we have to go how the world is going. For those saying it will be hard for parents who pay fees in kind, you can take your maize to school, it will be valued the equivalent amount then indicated in the system as well,” she said.

Mbaika was speaking at AIC Mwaani Ilima Mixed Secondary School during a prize-giving day cum school bus fundraiser where she encouraged teachers to identify and nurture talents among their students.

She called upon teachers to encourage students to compete not only locally but also even globally.

“I heard someone mention a certain school saying that it’s on another level, that no one can compete with it, why? Records are there to be broken, what makes you think you can’t even do better than that school? You have what it takes and I must laud the 2023 class for exemplary performance,” she said.

However, Kaiti constituency MP Joshua Kimilu opposed her sentiments, saying that as MPs they will make sure to fight the directive, whether in Parliament or in Court.

“We cannot sit and watch as parents and schools continue suffering, this is not the way to go,” he said.

Kimilu called on parents to support their children where necessary adding that he was happy with what they were doing.

Ilima ward MCA Jonathan Muthoka, who is also an alumnus of the school, expressed pride in the student he has been sponsoring who made it to the university.
