Danger lurks for children as bridge in Kisii remains in disrepair

Part of the bridge that was destroyed by raging floods. Children are in danger when they will attempt to cross when schools reopen next week.

Parents in Ogembo Municipality fear for their children as the repair of Nyakorokoro Bridge has delayed, forcing them to take longer routes to get to school.

The bridge used to provide a short cut to Getetare, Elsa and Ogembo schools but now the parents may have to dig deeper into their pockets for transport to school.

But when schools reopen next week, there is the danger of children attempting to cross the river to save on cash and time.

Since the bridge sagged and broke more than three years ago, neither of the two county governments has bothered to repair it.

Three years ago, the then Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua and Kisii County Governor slipped and plunge into the River Gucha but were rescued by the public.

A visit to the site reveals overgrown twigs closing the Murram road leading to the bridge.

When he addressed the public recently at Tendere Location chief’s office, area MCA James Ondari said that the county had put aside some money for the construction of the bridge.

“The government has slotted Ksh200 million towards the modernization of Ogembo hospital and has put aside some money to build the bridge,” he said.
