The High Court of Kenya in Nairobi has ordered embattled National Parents Association (NPA) Chairman Maiyo Nicholas and team to vacate office within seven days.
Newly elected officials of the association led by their chair David Obuhatsa Silas had gone to court for revocation of a gazette notice No.8777 dated May 31, 2022 which recognized Mr Maiyo and others as officials of NPA officials.
Justice Hedwig Ong’undi ordered the Maiyo-led team to vacate office detailing that they were illegally in office.
“An order is hereby issued on Maiyo, Sarah Kagendo, Jeremiah Nyakundi, Onesmus Kauwi, Patrick Lumumba, Rose Otiek and Mohammed Omar whether by themselves, their proxies, agents or servants from denying the Obuhatsa-led faction from accessing the offices of the National Parents Association,” said Justice Ong’undi.
Mr Maiyo and team were ordered to hand over all documents, website, bank accounts, sponsorship agreements and receipt books to the offices of NPA on the 13th Floor No.1305 at the Reinsurance Plaza, Taifa Road, Nairobi within seven days from the date of the order (September 19,2022).
The court approved the new officials led by David Obuhatsa Silas and Eskimos Kobia as the new Chairperson and Secretary General respectively of the Parents National Association.
The officials who were gazetted on September 9, 2022 will now take over from the Maiyo team.
Other officials gazetted alongside Mr Obuhatsa are Joseph Langat (deputy national chairman), Caroline Madina (treasurer), Nancy Chege (deputy treasurer), Cecilia Cheptumo (organizing secretary), John Njiraini (member), Rogen Mwawasi (member), Absolom Mukuusi (member) and Sammy Ndunda Mbae (chief executive officer).
The National Elections Board (NEB) had ordered for new elections in May this year after the High Court nullified the election of the former officials. A section of parents had petitioned the Ministry of Education to order for fresh elections saying Mr Maiyo’s team were in office illegally.
