Court halts registration of KUPPET Laikipia officials after election dispute

Court Hammer. High Court has suspended the NTSA's Instant Fine System

The Employment and Labour Relations Court of Kenya, sitting in Nyeri, has temporarily halted the registration of officials elected during the recent Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) elections in Laikipia County, following a legal challenge by union members.

According to a court order issued on March 11, 2026, Justice Stella Chemutai Rutto directed that the respondents in the case be served with the application and be required to file their responses within seven days.

The case was filed by Robert Miano and Paul Maina together with three other applicants who are contesting the outcome of the KUPPET Laikipia branch elections conducted on February 28, 2026.

In the interim, the court ordered that the third respondent, who is responsible for registering union officials, should not register the elected officials of the KUPPET Laikipia branch until the matter is heard and the court issues further directions.

This effectively prevents the officials declared winners in the election from formally assuming office.

The court has scheduled the matter for mention on March 23, 2026, when it will give further directions after considering the respondents’ responses.

The court order also carries a penal notice warning that failure to comply with the directive could result in contempt of court proceedings.

Those who disobey the order risk facing legal penalties, including fines or possible imprisonment.

The case, registered as ELRCPET/E006/2026, lists Robert Miano, Paul Maina and three others as applicants, while the respondents include the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, the union’s Secretary General and eight other parties.

Until the court determines the matter, the registration of the newly elected KUPPET Laikipia officials will remain suspended
