Court halts KNUT national elections at Tom Mboya Labour College

Court Hammer. Court of Appeal has nullified the TSC internship programme

The Employment and Labour Relations Court in Kisumu has temporarily halted the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) national elections scheduled for tomorrow at Tom Mboya Labour College.

In an order issued on March 30, 2026, Justice Nzioki wa Makau certified as urgent an application filed by George Anyona Arek against the Registrar of Trade Unions, KNUT Nairobi Branch and other respondents.

The judge directed that the matter be served for inter partes hearing on April 20, 2026.

Pending the hearing and determination of the application, Justice Nzioki wa Makau granted a temporary injunction restraining the respondents — including their agents, servants and any other persons acting under their instructions — from conducting or carrying out nominations or elections of KNUT officials slated for April 2 and 3, 2026.

The elections, which were to be held at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu, were expected to bring together delegates from across the country to elect national officials of the teachers’ union.

In a penal notice accompanying the order, the court warned that any disobedience or non-observance of the directive would attract legal consequences against those found in breach.

The case places the KNUT national polls in uncertainty pending the inter partes hearing later this month, where the court will determine the way forward.
