Residents of Siaya County have been warned to beware of conmen who are currently using the names of schools to solicit money in the name of offering tenders.
The bursar of Siaya Township Secondary School Mr. George Obim disclosed that there is a group of conmen who have been using his name and the name of his school to con unsuspecting people under the guise of offering tenders for the supply of commodities.
He says that they have received numerous complaints from suppliers who have fallen prey to the conmen, noting that there are those who have lost up to over Sh40,000 to the fraudsters.
Mr. Obim who spoke to the media recently stated that the fraudsters usually call the unsuspecting suppliers and promise them a lucrative deal for the supply and in the event, demand for some kickbacks.
He cited an incident where the conmen used his name to convince an unsuspecting supplier to send some money in order to secure a tender only to realize later that he had been conned.
The Bursar who has already recorded a statement at Siaya Police Station has cautioned the members of the public to be very careful with such unscrupulous characters, noting that schools have a clear procedure through which contracts and tenders are usually secured.
Cases where unsuspecting members of the public are being conned in such a manner have been on the rise in Siaya County especially involving school administration like St. Sylvester’s Madiany Girls’ High School, Majengo Mixed Secondary School, Siaya Central Secondary School and Ambira High School having reported similar cases.
