Chief in Machakos bans sand harvesting to combat rising student absenteeism

Kinanie Chief Josphat Musinga said students were involved in sand harvesting at Wathia Dam.

Kinanie Chief Josphat Musinga has issued a stern warning to parents who have yet to take their children back to school, decrying the rising absenteeism among students.

During a community baraza, Chief Musinga expressed concern that many school-age children were staying at home and engaging in social vices instead of attending classes.

He pointed out that some students were involved in sand harvesting at Wathia Dam, further keeping them away from school.

“The few coins they are earning by engaging in sand harvesting is making them avoid going to school. If this is not addressed, then their future is at stake,” he said.

To curb the growing trend of truancy, the chief announced an immediate ban on sand harvesting at the dam and warned that those found violating the directive would face consequences.

Echoing his sentiments, Esther Muli, a teacher at Wathia Primary and Junior Secondary School, noted that inconsistent student attendance was significantly disrupting learning and undermining academic progress.

“Some students, moreso day scholars, have no consistency in attending classes, and this is really affecting their progress. What is worrying is that their parents remain unmoved,” she said.

The chief urged parents to take their responsibility seriously, emphasizing that education remains the best path to securing a better future for their children.
