Cheboingoing Comprehensive School is heading into the Bomet Central sub-county Primary and Junior Secondary School games with confidence and high expectations as the competition kicks off tomorrow at Chepngaina field.

The institution, which dominated the Bomet Township Zone championships, will field teams in both boys’ and girls’ volleyball categories at the primary and Junior Secondary School (JSS) levels.

Their impressive performances at the zonal stage have raised hopes of another successful outing as they seek qualification for the Rift Valley regional games scheduled to be held in Nakuru.

Head of Institution and volleyball head coach Rodrick Chepkwony says the teams have prepared thoroughly and are ready to face stiff competition from other schools in the sub-county.

“Our target is to qualify for the Rift Valley regional championships. We know the competition will be tough, but we have what it takes to win,” said Chepkwony.

The school’s success has been built on a deliberate strategy of identifying and nurturing talent from an early age.

According to Chepkwony, volleyball training begins as early as grade three, allowing learners to develop skills and gain experience before reaching the highly competitive stages.

“Our vision is to make Cheboingoing a powerhouse in sports, especially volleyball. We have talented learners and we continue to nurture them through structured training programmes,” he said.

Chepkwony praised the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum for providing opportunities for learners to develop their talents alongside academic growth.

He noted that sports have become a pathway to greater opportunities for many students.

The school’s volleyball programme has already produced remarkable results, with more than 10 former learners earning scholarships to secondary schools across Bomet county due to their volleyball talents.

“We have students who are now learning free of charge because of their sporting abilities. This shows the value of investing in talent development,” he said.

The school head also revealed that several coaches and teachers from senior schools have been scouting players from the institution, an indication of the quality of talent being produced.

Beyond competition, Chepkwony believes sports play a vital role in shaping discipline and keeping young people away from negative influences such as drug abuse.
