The Right Reverend Paul Kariuki, Bishop of the Embu Diocese in the Catholic Church, has called for increased vigilance from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and teachers to prevent incidents of examination cheating, which have marred previous exams.

Addressing the press, Bishop Kariuki emphasized the importance of providing candidates with an environment that instils confidence and success, free from temptations to cheat.

He acknowledged the role of KNEC officials in ensuring the readiness and accessibility of question papers, but also stressed the responsibility of teachers and security personnel in creating conducive exam centres.

Additionally, the Bishop encouraged candidates to approach their examinations with confidence, recognizing that their teachers have prepared them well, and now it is their turn to meet the challenge and strive for their best grades.

“Cheating not only undermines the integrity of national exams but also jeopardizes the quality of future professionals, as grades obtained through dishonest means may not reflect genuine competence,” Kariuki underscored.

In his view, examinations should not be seen as a life-or-death matter; rather, they should guide candidates toward professions they are passionate about and can pursue with enthusiasm.

“Clean, honest results are the foundation for a successful future career, whereas cheating may lead to dissatisfaction in careers that candidates do not genuinely appreciate,” the Bishop stated.
