Traders around Moi University Main Campus are assessing their losses after fire erupted last night, devastating their property worth millions of shillings.
Firefighters from Eldoret town, which is about 30 kilometres away from the institution, reached the scene too late after valuable items had already been destroyed by the flames.

The affected kiosks include clothing stores and general merchandise shops.
Mark Too, a resident of Talai centre, along with other locals, criticized Moi University for not having a fire department, especially since the kiosks were located right next to the university’s main gate. An ambulance arrived hours later to transport a trader who had fainted during the incident.

Residents also criticized the university for the poor road conditions in the area, pointing out that many students reside in this inaccessible region.
Sammy Odiera, a trader at Talai centre, expressed concern over the tense relationship between the university and local residents, a sentiment shared by Kamau Munywa.
This marks the second fire incident in the area following an earlier blaze that destroyed the Reliance Supermarket some time back.
