Bungoma County’s junior school teams have made a bright start to the Western Region Junior School Games, delivering impressive performances in both handball and basketball during the opening two days of competition.
The county’s girls’ teams emerged as the standout performers, remaining unbeaten in basketball while registering crucial victories in handball to boost their chances of qualifying for the national championships.
In handball, Kimilili FYM Junior School recovered strongly after opening with a 16-16 draw against Busia’s Changara ACK to defeat Kakamega’s Muhomo Junior School 30-25 in a thrilling contest. The victory placed the Bungoma girls in a strong position heading into the remaining group matches.
The boys from Namakhele Junior School began their campaign in emphatic style, thrashing Vihiga’s Jidereri 41-24 with an attacking masterclass. However, they were unable to maintain their winning run, falling 38-27 to Busia’s Changara ACK in their second outing.
Elsewhere in the handball competition, Kakamega’s Muhomo girls defeated Vihiga’s Nabwani 33-23 before losing to Kimilili FYM, while Kakamega’s Mayoyo boys edged Busia’s Changara ACK 32-31 and later defeated Vihiga’s Jidereri 37-25.

Bungoma also made a strong statement on the basketball court, where St. John’s Savannah Junior School produced two commanding performances to remain unbeaten after the opening rounds.
The Bungoma girls opened with a 21-15 victory over Kakamega School before overpowering Vihiga’s Emutsuru 21-3 in a dominant display that highlighted their championship credentials.
Busia’s Lugulu ACK also enjoyed a perfect start, defeating Emutsuru 21-6 before overcoming Kakamega School 21-17.
In the boys’ basketball competition, St. Joseph’s RC Junior School endured a difficult start, losing 21-17 to Busia’s Nambale AC. The Bungoma side, however, bounced back in style, edging Kakamega’s Madivini 21-18 to revive its hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
Nambale AC maintained its unbeaten run by defeating Vihiga’s Ebunangwe 21-13, while Madivini had earlier beaten the same opponents 21-12.
With the group stage entering a decisive phase, Bungoma’s representatives will be looking to build on their encouraging performances and secure qualification to the national championships as competition at the Western Region Junior School Games gathers momentum.
