Kisii County Woman Representative Donya Doris Aburi has called on the national government to establish a National School, a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus, and a Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institute in Bonchari Constituency to bring it at par with other constituencies in the county.

Speaking during a public engagement forum in Bonchari, Aburi said the constituency continues to lag in key education and health training infrastructure despite producing thousands of Form Four and Form Three graduates annually. She noted that students from Bonchari are forced to travel long distances to access national schools, medical training, and technical colleges in other parts of Kisii County and beyond.

“It is unfair that Bonchari remains without a National School, a KMTC campus, or a fully equipped TVET institute when neighbouring constituencies have benefited from these projects,” she said. “Our children deserve equal opportunities to access quality education and skills training close to home.”

Aburi argued that the establishment of a National School would ease congestion in existing county schools and provide high-achieving students from low-income families a chance to access elite education without the burden of high boarding fees outside the county. She added that a KMTC campus in Bonchari would help address the shortage of healthcare workers in local dispensaries and hospitals, while also creating employment for tutors and support staff.

On technical education, she emphasized that a TVET institute would equip youth with practical skills in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, agriculture, and ICT, reducing dependency on white-collar jobs that are increasingly scarce. “We cannot talk about empowering the youth if we do not give them tools to create their own jobs,” she said.

Residents who attended the forum supported the call, saying many parents struggle to pay transport and accommodation costs for children admitted to institutions outside the constituency. Traders and boda boda operators also noted that such projects would spur economic activity in Bonchari through increased demand for housing, food, and transport services.

Aburi said she had already engaged the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health on the matter and would follow up to ensure Bonchari is included in the next phase of national infrastructure projects. She urged local leaders to speak with one voice to lobby for equitable distribution of resources across Kisii County.

“Development should not be about political affiliation or proximity to power. Every constituency in Kisii deserves its fair share,” she said.

She took a swipe at the area MP, Dr Charles Onchoke, for the slow development of the constituency and asked the residents to think of replacing him with a suitable leader when the right time for elections comes next year.

Doris Aburi, who is said to have shifted interest from defending her seat in 2027 and seeking the area MP seat, said that the push for these institutions comes as the government continues to expand access to technical and medical training nationwide. She noted that President Ruto has reiterated that TVET and KMTC expansion are central to his administration’s plan to tackle youth unemployment and strengthen primary healthcare.

If approved, the projects would mark a significant shift for Bonchari, which has historically received fewer national-level institutions compared to constituencies like Kitutu Chache North, Kitutu Chache South, Nyaribari Chache, and South Mugirango.
