Parents in Bomet County have been urged to take charge of their children’s discipline as they start their August break from schools.
This call was made by Kipsigis professional and education advocate Dr. Michael Bongei who urged parents and guardians to take greater responsibility in guiding their children and ensuring they remain positively engaged during the break.
Speaking after donating a modern generator to Lelkatet Secondary School in Chemaner ward of Bomet East sub county, Dr. Bongei emphasized that the holidays should not be a time for idleness or exposure to harmful influences, but rather an opportunity for growth, learning, and character development.
“I urge parents and guardians to take charge of their children’s time during this break. Keep them engaged whether through academic revision, helping out at home, developing life skills, or participating in church and community activities,” Dr. Bongei said.

He added: “We must protect our children from dangers such as drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, loitering, or reckless boda boda riding, which continue to trap many of our youths in a cycle of poverty and wasted potential.”
Dr. Bongei also acknowledged the efforts made by teachers in laying a strong foundation for learners throughout the school term.
“Our teachers have done their part in the classroom by nurturing, guiding, and shaping the future of our children. Now, it is the parents’ turn to supplement that effort at home during this holiday. Education is a shared responsibility,” he remarked.
His remarks come amid growing concerns over increased cases of indiscipline and vulnerability among school-going children during long holidays.
As part of his commitment to strengthening education, the elite donated a generator to Lelkatet Secondary School to enhance learning and administration.
“This generator is not just a machine, it’s a tool for empowerment. Reliable electricity is essential for running science and computer laboratories, which are now fundamental to quality education. It also supports administrative functions and co-curricular activities, enabling schools to operate more efficiently,” he stated.

The school administration praised the donation, describing it as both timely and transformative.
Teachers and students noted that frequent power outages had previously disrupted learning and the generator will help them a lot.
Dr. Bongei reaffirmed his commitment to supporting both families and institutions, underscoring that community progress depends on the dual investment in education and responsible parenting.
“If we invest in both our schools and our homes, then we are truly investing in the future of our county and country,” he concluded.
