Kitelakapel Technical Training Institute (TTI) has reinforced its growing reputation as a regional centre of excellence in technical and vocational education and training after receiving a new cohort of vocational instructors from Tamugh Vocational Training Centre (VTC) for a structured upskilling programme.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening instructional competence and improving the quality of skills delivery across the vocational training sector.

The arrival of the instructors marks another milestone in the institute’s commitment to continuous professional development for trainers in technical and vocational education.

As demand for skilled manpower continues to grow in Kenya and beyond, institutions such as Kitelakapel TTI are increasingly playing a critical role not only in training learners but also in enhancing the capacity of instructors who shape the next generation of artisans, technicians and innovators.

The visiting instructors were formally received by Deputy Principal (Administration) Stafford Orina and Deputy Principal (Academics) Wafula Wekalamoyo.

The engagement underscored the institute’s emphasis on mentorship, collaboration and professional growth.

 Competency and Industry Relevance

According to the institute’s training philosophy, instructor upskilling is a core pillar in ensuring that vocational education remains practical, relevant and aligned with evolving industry standards.

The programme is designed to equip instructors with updated pedagogical approaches, enhanced technical competencies and exposure to emerging technologies shaping modern workplaces.

The initiative also aligns with the broader objectives of the Department of Technical and Vocational Training under the County Government of West Pokot.

Participants are being exposed to a competency-based training model that mirrors real industry environments.

The programme incorporates practical demonstrations, modern training equipment, peer learning opportunities and mentorship from experienced technical trainers.

This hands-on approach ensures that learning remains practical, applicable and responsive to industry needs.

Deputy Principal (Academics) Wafula Wekalamoyo emphasised the importance of continuous professional development among instructors.

He noted that the effectiveness of vocational training institutions depends heavily on the quality and preparedness of their trainers.

“When instructors are well-equipped, they are better positioned to deliver relevant, engaging and industry-aligned training to learners,” he said.

Deputy Principal (Administration) Stafford Orina reiterated the institution’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for professional growth.

He noted that Kitelakapel TTI remains open to partnerships that strengthen technical education and promote youth empowerment through skills development.

Economic Transformation

The institute has increasingly positioned itself as a centre for vocational excellence, attracting trainees and instructors from different parts of the region.

Its expanding role in capacity building reflects the national effort to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions as drivers of economic transformation.

The upskilling programme is also expected to help instructors respond more effectively to changing labour market demands, including the adoption of new technologies and production systems.

The presence of instructors from Tamugh VTC at Kitelakapel TTI represents more than a training exercise.

It reflects a broader transformation agenda aimed at improving the quality, relevance and competitiveness of vocational education in Kenya.

The institute has extended an invitation to instructors from other regions to participate in future programmes, emphasising that the future of vocational education depends on collaboration, shared expertise and continuous professional growth.

As the programme continues, expectations remain high that participants will return to their institutions with enhanced competencies, improved confidence and stronger capacity to deliver quality training.
