Back to school preperation is important to learners

As schools prepare to reopen next week for the third term, education stakeholders emphasize the importance of preparing learners psychologically for the crucial academic period ahead.

Learners have been on August holiday, and for many, the resumption of studies will mark an intense term, especially for Grade 6 and Grade 10 pupils who are scheduled to sit their national assessments that will determine their progression to the next level.

Ahead of reopening, pupils from the Pontifical Missionary Children (PMC) movement in the Catholic Church, popularly known as liturgical dancers, held a special mass on Thursday at Makutano Catholic Church in West Pokot County. The event brought together learners from different primary school levels.

During the mass, the young learners showcased a variety of talents, including singing in different voices, dancing, and reciting poems on themes touching on the church and education. They also demonstrated confidence and mastery of both Swahili and English during Bible readings, with excellent pronunciation that educators say can boost their reading and comprehension skills in school.

The parish assistant priest and PMC chaplain, Fr. Ignesius Omonya Oroni, who presided over the mass, encouraged the learners to embrace discipline, hard work, and respect for their teachers, parents, and themselves.

“For any learner to be successful in life, he or she must show and maintain a high standard of discipline,” Fr. Oroni said, while blessing the children and praying for their protection as they travel back to school.

A handful of catechists and PMC animators were also present, urging the young learners to remain focused and wishing them success in their academic journey as schools reopen.
