Following the Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha’s announcement on the school reopening dates, Narok County Governor Samual Tunai has formed an Education Steering Committee that is set to put in place measures for the smooth reopening of schools.
According to Governor Tunai, a research conducted by Narok Director of Education, 95% of public schools in Narok are incapable of reopening due to failure to adhere to the Ministry of Health guidelines.
Speaking during an education stakeholders meeting held at Maasai Mara University, Mr. Tunai said Narok public schools must be reopened and therefore, the need to form committees that will put in place measures that will see strict adherence to the Covid-19 protocols.
“If we take an example of a school like illmashiriani, it has a population of 1000 students with sixteen classrooms, meaning a classroom will have over sixty students making it impossible to keep social distance,” he said.
He said that the committee will ensure the availability of adequate water tanks for maintaining hygiene, enough spaces for classrooms and adequate masks for students and more infrastructures such as labs and dormitories for boarding schools.
From the county level, the committees are chaired by the Governor and co- chaired by the county commissioner and from the sub-county level, a technical committee will be formed and headed by the director of education.
Present during the meeting was Narok County Commissioner Evans Achoki who asked parents to ensure that their children go back to school come January.
