Kibuon secondary school in Nyatike, Migori County has been closed indefinitely following students unrest for two days after their school principal was transferred to another institution.
The students who blamed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) over the transfer in the course of the term refused to carry out their normal routine programs demanding the return of the principal.
Confirming the incident was Nyatike sub-county director of education Elijah Kongere indicated that the decision was reached to close the school after they had threatened to destroy properties.
“We don’t expect the students to protest the transfer of their teachers especially a principal because this is now a national policy that advocates for delocalization of school heads and therefore the students should only concentrate on playing their role learning and not interfering with the processes of the ministry,” said Kongere.
Kongere also confirmed that the outgoing principal Mr. Kennedy Odero received his transfer letter to Wi Obiero secondary school in Homabay County last week and has not shown any interest in resisting the transfer. The principals of the two schools were swapped by the TSC.
“We have tried urging the students to stay calm by explaining to them why and when the transfers are always done a move they did not welcome and this therefore forced us to invite the security officers led by the district commissioner to help close the school it allow board meeting that has been called to chat on the way forward. Until then the students are expected to stay away from the institution,” added Kongere.
The director said they suspect the students were incited by locals from around the institution and investigations are ongoing even though they did not destroy any property
