Nyeri County Government has enrolled 200 interns who graduated from colleges and universities to train and enable them acquire experience and relevant skills in the job market.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga said his Government has allocated Sh24 million in the 2018/19 financial year to be spent on stipends for the interns.
He spoke during the launch of the internship programme at the Nyeri town Hall grounds recently.
He said other similar programs will be used to stem radicalisation and unemployment among youth.
“It is important that we all understand that as a county, if we do not take care of our youths this is a time bomb waiting to explode,” stated the Governor.
To him, the youth must be taken care of and employers cannot keep on asking them for five year’s experience yet they are fresh from school.
His Government is seeking to provide experience as it strengths the civil service.
Kahiga said youth in Kiganjo in Nyeri Town Constituency and Chaka in Kieni Constituency are recruited to go and work in Mandera but some end up radicalized.
The county youth have been seeking jobs at quarries in Mandera and Wajir counties.
He said when desperate the youth can easily fall into a trap.
“I initiated this programme, as one of my anchor programmes for supporting the empowerment of youths,” he said. Each intern will be earning Sh10, 000 monthly.
The programme aims at preparing youth to take up responsibilities in the competitive labour market.
