A student who was shot during confrontations between police and squatters in the 44,000-acre Mwea settlement scheme in Mbeere South, Embu County has died.

Kennedy Muvevi, aged 20, a masonry student at Makima Youth Polytechnic, died while undergoing treatment at the Kerugoya Level Four hospital in Kirinyaga County.

He was shot in the stomach and the bullet exited on the back, rupturing his intestines.

Tens of residents had confronted police officers who were providing security for the scheme beneficiaries, who were being taken to view parcels of land which they were recently allocated.

The residents, mainly youths, started pelting police with stones, leading to the shootout.

The student underwent blood transfusion, according to his father Robert Mutua.

Mutua said his son was not part of the demonstrators and was just visiting his brother who is a trader at Muthiru market.

“My son was peaceful and obedient young man. It is too unfortunate that he has died having wronged no one,” he said.
