- The govt has commissioned a Sh150 million hostel project at Kilungu KMTC in Makueni County to expand student accommodation and enrollment.
- PS Mbaika has confirmed the contractor is on site, noting the college has fallen behind its expected cohort admissions due to incomplete infrastructure.
- The project has been positioned as part of a wider government effort to expand KMTC campuses and health training capacity across the country.
The government has commissioned the construction of Sh150 million hostels at Kilungu Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Kaiti Constituency, Makueni County, in a bid to expand student accommodation and increase enrollment.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, held alongside a meeting with clergy in Kilungu, Aviation Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika said the hostel project will address infrastructure gaps that have delayed full operationalisation of the college. “The contractor for the hostel is now on site. This is part of government efforts to provide adequate infrastructure to allow the college to admit more students,” she said.
Mbaika said the college was initially expected to have admitted its second or third cohort by now, noting that completion of key facilities, including hostels, is critical to scaling up training opportunities for medical students in the region. “We are supposed to be receiving the second or third cohort now if at all we had completed the KMTC,” she said.

The PS noted that once completed, the institution will enhance access to medical training for youth from Makueni and neighbouring counties, aligning with the government’s agenda to expand health training institutions across the country. The Sh150 million hostel is expected to provide modern accommodation for students, easing congestion and improving learning conditions.
The commissioning comes as the government intensifies efforts to equip KMTC campuses countrywide to meet growing demand for health professionals.
