Teachers from Mumias West and Matungu sub-counties have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to education and the wider society as Kenya prepares to join the world in celebrating World Teachers’ Day on October 5.
The teachers were feted during a colourful ceremony organised by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) at St Peter’s Mumias National School, bringing together education stakeholders to celebrate educators whose work often extends far beyond the classroom.
The event provided a moment to recognise teachers not only for academic achievement, but also for their leadership, mentorship, commitment to inclusion and the lasting impact they have made in the lives of learners.

Speaking during the ceremony in Mumias, Mr Samson Matoke, TSC Director for Matungu Sub-County, praised teachers for their critical role in shaping society and challenged them to continue putting learners at the centre of their profession.
Matoke congratulated the teachers who emerged top in various categories, describing their recognition as a reflection of the dedication and commitment they have demonstrated in their schools and communities.
Among those honoured was Francis Obwamu of Mumias Central Comprehensive School, who emerged the overall best teacher in Lower Kakamega, earning recognition for his exemplary service and commitment to learners.
Kennedy Kunani of Namulungu Senior School was also feted after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, an honour that recognised his long-standing contribution to the teaching profession.
The awards covered several categories, including School Leadership Excellence Award, Teacher Mentor Award, Inclusive Educator Award, Early Career Educator Award and Lifetime Achievement Award, among others.
The diverse categories highlighted the changing role of teachers in modern education, where success is measured not only through examination results but also through mentorship, leadership, inclusion and the ability to nurture learners into responsible members of society.
The ceremony was attended by education stakeholders from Mumias West and Matungu, who joined the TSC in celebrating teachers for their service.
As the world prepares to mark World Teachers’ Day, the celebrations in Mumias offered a timely reminder that behind every successful learner is often a teacher who has invested time, patience and belief in their potential.
