- Kiharu TVC Principal Dr Daniel Wahungu has said the value of education lies in the transformation of the individual, urging trainees to develop confidence, discipline and responsibility alongside technical skills.
- The college has announced a week-long Jitume digital skills programme, running October 12 to 16, 2026, in partnership with the Ministry of TVET.
- Trainees and community youth have been invited to the programme, which will offer practical training in digital marketing, e-commerce and the application of artificial intelligence.
The value of education should be judged by the transformation it brings to an individual rather than the mere possession of a certificate, Kiharu Technical and Vocational College Principal Dr Daniel K. Wahungu has said.
Dr Wahungu said institutions of learning have a responsibility to equip students with practical skills while developing their confidence, discipline and sense of responsibility. He challenged trainees and staff at the college to reflect on the impact of their time at Kiharu TVC and consider whether the institution was preparing them to make a meaningful contribution to society. According to the principal, the most important question for a graduate is not whether they attended a particular institution, but the difference the institution made in their lives. “The question will be, what did Kiharu TVC make you become?” he said.

He said students should leave the college with more than technical knowledge, arguing that education should result in personal growth that is evident in how graduates conduct themselves and interact with others. Dr Wahungu singled out confidence as one of the qualities that training should cultivate, particularly among young people who may initially struggle with public speaking and expressing their views. He also placed responsibility at the centre of the institution’s mission, saying technical competence without responsible behaviour would undermine the purpose of education. “If education does not make you responsible, then what was the use of you going to school?” he asked. He argued that graduates should be distinguishable from those who abandoned their education through the skills, values and maturity acquired during their years of study.
The remarks come as Kiharu TVC seeks to strengthen its role in preparing young people for a labour market increasingly shaped by technology, innovation and digital enterprise. The institution has positioned itself as a centre for technology and innovation, with training programmes aimed at helping young people acquire practical competencies that can be applied in employment and self-employment.

The college is also preparing to host a week-long digital skills programme under the Jitume initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of TVET. The training will run from October 12 to 16, 2026, at the Kiharu TVC Jitume ICT Lab. Trainees and young people from the surrounding community are expected to benefit from practical instruction in digital marketing and e-commerce, including the application of artificial intelligence. The programme is intended to expose participants to digital tools and emerging opportunities as businesses increasingly move their operations and marketing activities online.
The Jitume initiative will complement the college’s technical training by introducing community members to skills that can be applied beyond the classroom, and allow young people who may not be enrolled in full-time programmes to acquire marketable digital skills in areas such as e-commerce, digital marketing and artificial intelligence.
