- KNUT Makueni has called off its two-day demonstration after talks with County Commissioner Khalif Abdullahi.
- The union has issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding the transfer of County Director of Education Lydia Mutegi.
- Commissioner Abdullahi has pledged to consult the MoE and address the grievances, urging teachers to return to class in the meantime.
The two-day Makueni County Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) demonstration demanding the transfer of County Director of Education Lydia Mutegi has been called off.
The demonstrations were called off by National Chief Whip, who is also Makueni Branch Executive Secretary, Benson Ndambuki, following talks with County Commissioner Khalif Abdullahi.
The union leaders gave a seven-day ultimatum for the transfer of the county education director, whom they accuse of oppressing teachers and lacking transparency over alleged illegal fees imposed on learners, among other key issues. “If seven days are over and the director is not transferred, then we will be back to the streets, no turning back. Enough is enough; teachers, the union and all education stakeholders must be respected,” Ndambuki said.

Addressing the union leaders at the County Commissioner’s compound, Abdullahi thanked the leaders for their peaceful demonstration, acknowledging that it was their right, and promised that their grievances would be addressed. “I have personally received your complaints, and I promise I am in consultation with the Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities, and we are going to address this matter amicably. However, our learners’ education should not be compromised. I call upon you to go back to class as we look into this matter,” the commissioner said.
