- Bomet University students have organised a peaceful demonstration to Chepkosa Dam following the drowning of a student on September 18.
- BUSO has demanded the closure of the dam, installation of security lights, and construction of the Chebirir Bridge to prevent further deaths.
- Students have planned to present grievances to the Governor’s Office and BOMWASCO over water shortages before holding a candle-lighting mass
Bomet University students will today hold a peaceful demonstration to Chepkosa Dam to demand its closure following the drowning of a student at the water reservoir last Friday.
The students, under the leadership of the Bomet University Students’ Organisation (BUSO), are expected to assemble at the university gate from 9 am before proceeding to the dam.
The march comes after a student drowned at Chepkosa Dam on Friday, September 18, while taking a bath. Students will also honour another comrade who previously lost his life at the same dam.
According to a memorandum issued by BUSO Secretary General Obala Francis, the students will hold a 30-minute remembrance session at the dam before proceeding to the Governor’s Office to present their concerns. The students are also raising concerns over water shortages, which they say have forced some comrades to resort to dangerous methods of accessing water.
Other demands include the installation of security lights around Chepibirir, construction of the Chebirir Bridge to improve safe access and movement, and the closure of Chepkosa Dam to prevent further loss of life.

After presenting their concerns at the Governor’s Office, the students will proceed to Bomet Water and Sewerage Company (BOMWASCO) to submit their grievances over the water shortage. They will thereafter assemble at the bridge to address the media.
BUSO has urged students taking part in the march to remain calm, disciplined and peaceful, and to respect public property, members of the community and lawful instructions. Participants have been asked to wear pure black as a sign of mourning.

The demonstration is scheduled to end at 2 pm, after which the students will proceed to the university’s MPH for a candle-lighting mass in memory of their departed comrade, identified in the memorandum as Caren.
The notice was signed by BUSO Secretary General Obala Francis, President Ruth Zico and President Ndiwa Colline.
