- Five comprehensive schools in Narok have received books and storage cabinets to strengthen reading programmes.
- The initiative extends library support to schools located farther from the county library headquarters.
- Beneficiary schools will receive supervision for one year to promote effective use of donated materials.
The Narok County Library has donated 312 books and a storage cabinet to each of five schools in a move aimed at promoting a reading culture and improving access to learning resources among learners.
The donation was made through Book Aid International, Narok County Library Service and the Turning Pages, Changing Lives project, an initiative spearheaded by Narok County Chief Librarian Ann Punyua.
The beneficiary schools are Ilkeeek Aare, Oloonganayio, Oloikarere, Ilkiragarien and Olesharo Comprehensive Schools.
Unlike last year, when the programme mainly benefited schools located near the county library, this year’s initiative has been extended to schools situated farther from the library headquarters.
The library will provide supervision and support to the beneficiary schools for one year to ensure the books are properly utilised and reach the intended learners.
Promoting reading culture
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Narok County Executive Committee Member for Tourism, Wildlife and Culture Robert Simotwo commended the county librarian for spearheading the initiative.
Simotwo said the project had played an important role in mobilising learning resources for schools across the county, particularly those that may have limited access to educational materials.
He urged teachers to ensure learners have easy access to the donated books and encouraged schools to integrate reading into their daily learning activities.
“Reading is an important component of learning and plays a key role in expanding learners’ knowledge and supporting their overall development,” Simotwo said.
Representing the beneficiary schools, Saaya thanked the Narok County Library and its partners for the donation, pledging that the books and storage cabinets would be properly maintained and effectively used by learners.
The handover was also attended by Assistant Director of Culture Edward Swanya.

The initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration between the county library service and schools while expanding access to reading materials among learners, particularly those in schools located away from major library facilities.
