- Governor Stephen Sang says Nandi has increased its ECDE workforce and improved caregivers’ employment terms.

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has said his administration has significantly improved Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) in the county since he took office in 2017.
Sang said the county government had increased the number of ECDE caregivers from 708 who were previously employed on contract to 1,300, who have since been hired on permanent and pensionable terms.
Speaking during the launch of the school milk programme, the governor said the caregivers’ salaries had also been upgraded in line with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC)-approved scale.
“We have increased the number of ECDE caregivers from 708 who were on contract to 1,300 who are now employed on permanent and pensionable terms. Their salaries have also been upgraded under the SRC-approved scale,” Sang said.
Official county planning records confirm that Nandi converted 1,300 ECDE teachers from contract employment to permanent and pensionable terms.
Sang said the measures had contributed to improved academic performance among learners in the county.
He also said his administration had doubled bursary allocations from Sh60 million to Sh120 million annually, helping more students remain in school and pursue their education with fewer financial challenges.
“We have doubled bursaries from Sh60 million annually to Sh120 million. This has enabled many students in Nandi to continue with their education with ease,” he said.
The county government confirms that Sh120 million has been allocated to the bursary programme for the 2026/27 financial year. In June, it disbursed Sh71 million under the first cohort of beneficiaries.
Sh90 million school milk programme
The governor lauded the school milk programme, saying it would improve learners’ health and encourage them to remain in school.
He said the programme was informed by recent research that revealed worrying levels of malnutrition among school-going children in the county.
“This programme follows recent research that brought to the fore alarming levels of malnutrition among our school-going children. This is worrying and unacceptable,” Sang said.
He added that learners would also benefit from the provision of school uniforms, which he said would enable children to attend classes with dignity.
“Learners will also receive uniforms. This will ensure that our children are able to learn with dignity,” he said.
Sang assured residents that the programmes would continue, saying the county government was committed to investing in the welfare of learners and teachers.
“A child with milk is a healthier learner, a child with a uniform learns with dignity, and a well-supported and motivated teacher builds a future,” he said.
Under the Sh90 million school milk programme, about 42,000 learners from across the county’s 30 wards will receive milk every week throughout the year.
The Sh90 million allocation for the ECDE School Milk Feeding Programme is reflected in Nandi’s 2026/27 education budget. The county has also allocated Sh92 million to its ECDE uniform programme and Sh134 million towards recruitment and remuneration of ECDE teachers.

The governor said the programme was part of the county government’s broader efforts to improve learning outcomes by addressing challenges affecting children both inside and outside the classroom.
