The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a nationwide online Training Needs Assessment to identify professional development priorities for teachers and institutional leaders across the country.
The exercise is expected to provide the Commission with information to guide future teacher professional development programmes and strengthen continuous capacity building within the teaching profession.
According to an internal memo signed by Dr Mugwuku Nthamburi, TSC Director of Teacher Professional Management, County Directors have been instructed to mobilise and coordinate participation among designated respondents in their respective counties. Current reporting on the September 2 memo confirms the assessment and its September 10 deadline.
The assessment targets three categories of participants.
They include institutional leaders who are active officials of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) and the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA).
The second category comprises 106 Trainers of Trainers selected from across the counties who underwent specialised training in June 2026 on Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) and Remote Learning Methodologies.
The third group consists of TIMEC Champions involved in implementing Teacher Induction, Mentorship and Coaching programmes.
TSC has directed County Directors to cascade the online questionnaire to all designated participants and ensure maximum participation in the exercise.
All targeted respondents are required to complete and submit the questionnaire by 5:00pm on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
The Commission said information collected through the assessment would be treated with strict confidentiality and used to inform evidence-based decisions on teacher management and professional development.
Findings to guide future training
The exercise comes as the Commission continues to strengthen teacher capacity through structured professional development programmes aimed at improving teaching practices and helping educators respond to emerging demands in the education sector.
TSC’s online learning platform currently offers courses covering areas such as Teacher Induction, Mentorship and Coaching, ICT and artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, induction for heads of institutions, lesson observation and transformative pedagogies.

The findings of the Training Needs Assessment are expected to help TSC identify areas requiring further training and support, ultimately informing future interventions for continuous professional growth among teachers and education leaders.
