A promising university student left home expecting to return shortly. Days later, his family was confronted with the devastating discovery of his body in a river in Kisumu. Between those two moments lies a troubling chain of events that investigators must now reconstruct.
Fidel Dennis, a final-year aerospace engineering student at Kenyatta University, reportedly disappeared after leaving home with friends. What began as an ordinary outing soon became a desperate search when he failed to return and stopped responding to calls.
His disappearance has since raised a series of questions about his final movements, the people he interacted with and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Fidel had reportedly told his family that he would return shortly. When he did not, his father, Edward Ofuong’o, reportedly sent him Sh25,000 through M-Pesa to facilitate his travel and possible return to university.
But the anticipated journey home never happened.
By the following day, attempts to reach Fidel reportedly went unanswered. His family also found his laptop and travel bag in his room, adding to their concern and making his disappearance more difficult to understand.
The search soon shifted to Kisumu, where relatives reportedly received information suggesting that Fidel had visited several entertainment establishments with acquaintances.
It is at this point that the timeline becomes increasingly unclear.
According to accounts attributed to his relatives, Fidel was with friends when he received a phone call that allegedly changed his plans. He reportedly became separated from one of his companions and was later taken to different entertainment spots.
Then communication stopped.
His family eventually reported him missing at Kombewa Police Station as efforts to establish his whereabouts intensified.
The phone and watch that raised more questions
The circumstances became even more puzzling when individuals who were allegedly with Fidel reportedly returned his phone and wristwatch to his relatives.
Their explanation, according to the family, was that Fidel had handed the belongings to them.
For relatives already searching desperately for a missing family member, the explanation reportedly raised more questions than answers.
They wanted the items handed over to police so that investigators could establish whether they contained information capable of shedding light on Fidel’s final movements.
A missing person’s phone can potentially provide investigators with a detailed trail through calls, messages, location information and financial transactions. Whether such evidence exists in this case, and what it reveals, remains a matter for investigators to establish.
The discovery at River Nyamasaria
The family’s search eventually ended in tragedy.
Police reportedly informed relatives that a body had been recovered from River Nyamasaria. Identification documents reportedly found on the body were used to establish that the deceased was Fidel.
His remains were subsequently taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.
The discovery fundamentally changed the nature of the case.
What had started as a missing-person investigation became an inquiry into how a university student came to die under circumstances that his family says remain unexplained.
A postmortem examination reportedly provided further information while simultaneously deepening the mystery.
According to the family’s account, an independent postmortem found that Fidel died from lack of oxygen and had sustained several injuries. The family also says the examination found no evidence of drowning.
That detail is particularly significant because Fidel’s body was reportedly recovered from a river.
It does not, by itself, establish what happened to him. Determining the manner and circumstances of death requires investigators to bring together forensic findings, witness accounts, CCTV footage and other evidence.
The reported injuries, in particular, could become important in determining whether Fidel suffered violence before his death.
CCTV could hold a crucial clue
Investigators are reportedly reviewing CCTV footage from one of the entertainment establishments Fidel visited.
According to information provided by relatives, the footage allegedly shows him appearing distressed and involved in a confrontation.
If authenticated, such footage could provide investigators with one of the clearest windows into Fidel’s final known hours.
It could help establish who was present, when Fidel left the premises, whether he was accompanied and what happened immediately before his disappearance.
But footage must be carefully examined and interpreted alongside other evidence rather than treated as conclusive on its own.
The questions investigators must answer
Fidel’s death leaves several critical questions.
Who was he with during his final hours?
Who last saw him alive?
What happened after the reported phone call that allegedly changed his plans?
Why were his phone and wristwatch later returned?
Where exactly did he go after leaving the entertainment venues?
How did he end up at River Nyamasaria?
What caused the reported injuries?
And most importantly, did another person or persons play a role in his death?
These questions cannot be answered through speculation or social-media theories. They require a painstaking reconstruction of Fidel’s final movements.
Investigators could examine CCTV recordings, phone records, mobile-money transactions, witness statements and other forensic evidence to establish a reliable timeline.
A family waiting for answers
Behind the investigation is a family dealing with a loss that is difficult to comprehend.
Fidel was reportedly in his final year of aerospace engineering, close to completing an academic journey that could have opened the door to his professional career.
Instead, his family is now preparing to bury him while demanding to know how and why his life ended.
Their call for a thorough investigation is therefore not simply about establishing a cause of death. It is about reconstructing the events that preceded it and determining whether anyone should be held accountable.
The case also highlights the importance of treating missing-person reports with urgency, particularly when a person’s whereabouts suddenly become unknown and communication is lost.
Every hour can matter.
In Fidel’s case, the truth may ultimately emerge from the smallest pieces of evidence: a phone record, a CCTV frame, a witness statement, a transaction, a forensic finding or an account that does not match the established timeline.
For now, however, the final chapter of Fidel Dennis’ life remains incomplete.
A university student left home.
He never returned.
His body was later recovered from River Nyamasaria.
And his family is left demanding the answers that only a thorough investigation can provide.
