A retirement ceremony for veteran teacher Fred Simiyu turned into an emotional family celebration in Bungoma County after his children surprised him with a brand-new Toyota Hilux Double Cabin, in appreciation of his 35 years of service in the education sector.
Family members, friends, colleagues and well-wishers gathered for the colourful ceremony to honour Simiyu’s long teaching career and his contribution to shaping the lives of hundreds of learners. At the height of the celebrations, his children presented him with the vehicle, leaving the retired teacher visibly touched. They described the gift as a token of appreciation for their father’s sacrifices, commitment and dedication during his three-and-a-half decades of service under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The celebrations extended beyond honouring Simiyu alone. In a separate gesture, his daughter, who is based in Israel, surprised her mother with a newly built three-bedroom bungalow in Kimaeti sub-county, Bungoma County, recognising her sacrifices and support to the family over the years.
Together, the two surprises transformed what would ordinarily have been a routine retirement ceremony into a major family milestone, celebrating the journey of both parents and the fruits of their years of hard work. The Toyota Hilux symbolised the children’s gratitude for the years Simiyu spent serving the education sector, while the bungalow represented their appreciation for the role their mother played in supporting the family.
After 35 years of shaping young minds, Fred Simiyu has now embarked on a new chapter of life surrounded by the people who matter most to him, his retirement celebrated not merely as the end of a teaching career but as recognition of a lifetime of sacrifice, service, family and impact.
