Tensions are mounting at Kerundut Secondary School in Chepalungu, Bomet County, after parents demanded the immediate removal of the school principal and threatened protests when the school reopens later this month.

The parents have issued the Ministry of Education with a seven-day ultimatum to intervene, accusing the school administration of mismanagement, declining academic standards and deteriorating infrastructure.

They are also demanding the dissolution of the institution’s Board of Management, which they accuse of ignoring their complaints.

Parent Raeli Korgoren said the school’s leadership had failed to address problems affecting learners, including what she described as laxity among teachers.

“We are afraid our children are just in school and will return home with poor results because of the laxity displayed by teachers,” Korgoren said, as she called on the Ministry to take immediate action against the principal.

“Ministry officials must move with speed and crack the whip on a head teacher who has failed to show leadership,” she said.

The parents also alleged that school facilities had deteriorated despite their financial contributions. Korgoren claimed that some learners were sharing chairs and that sanitation facilities were overcrowded.

She further alleged that casual workers had not been paid and criticised the administration for failing to regularly engage parents on the affairs of the school.

David Sang, a former member of the Board of Management, said the dispute required urgent intervention by the County Director of Education. “This should reach the County Director: we want the principal out with immediate effect,” Sang said.

He warned that parents would not hesitate to disrupt the school’s operations. “If the ministry fails to act, we will close down the school until he is transferred,” Sang added.

However, the school administration has rejected the allegations, saying the institution is making academic progress. Deputy Principal Thomas Yegon said the school’s results had improved consistently over the past five years.

“Academically speaking, our school is on a positive trajectory, and parents should appreciate this,” Yegon said.

Yegon also denied allegations that students were short of desks, saying the school had adequate furniture for all learners.

He invited parents to inspect the facilities once the school reopens and urged them to engage the administration constructively.

The dispute leaves the Ministry of Education under pressure to intervene, as the seven-day deadline set by parents raises the prospect of protests and disruption when the school resumes operations.
