Four people, among them a primary school teacher, were seriously injured on Tuesday morning at Gucha near Kebirigo town in Nyamira County.
According to eyewitnesses, the teacher had just alighted from a Nissan matatu that was en route to Kisii when the accident occurred. It is reported that another vehicle lost control and veered off the road, hitting several pedestrians who were near the stage.
The victims sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to Gucha, Keroka and Nyamira hospitals for emergency treatment. Medical personnel at the hospitals confirmed that all four are in stable but serious condition and are receiving specialised care.
Police launch investigations
Police officers from Keroka and Nyamira police stations visited the scene and launched investigations into the cause of the accident. Traffic officials have urged motorists plying the Kisii–Nyamira route to exercise caution, especially around busy trading centres where pedestrians cross frequently.
A senior officer who identified himself as Philip Kirui said investigations had started to establish the cause of the accident. He appealed to drivers to shun running away to unknown places after accidents but instead report to the nearest police station for both their physical and mental health.
Residents called on the relevant authorities to erect clear road signs and speed bumps in the Gucha area to prevent similar incidents.
