Peace Ambassador and Kenyan sporting icon Tegla Loroupe has embarked on an 840-kilometre peace run from Kakuma Refugee Camp to Uhuru Park in Nairobi, turning a seven-day endurance journey into a national campaign for peace, education, inclusion, opportunity and hope.
Loroupe began the journey on August 17, 2026, in Kakuma. On Day Two, August 18, she and her team were in Lodwar Town, heading towards Kainuk before proceeding into West Pokot County. The journey will continue through Trans Nzoia before eventually reaching Nairobi, where it will culminate at Uhuru Park.
According to a report by My Best Runs, Loroupe is undertaking the journey alongside 28 refugees, giving the initiative an added dimension beyond athletics. My Best Runs reports that the initiative is also designed to highlight challenges facing refugee communities in Kakuma and Dadaab.

The Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation has long used sport as a platform for peacebuilding, opportunity, education and inclusion. Kakuma is home to refugees whose lives have been shaped by conflict and displacement, and starting the journey there brings the refugee experience into national focus while encouraging stronger relationships between refugees and their host communities.
Among the stories associated with the initiative is that of Yiech Pur Biel, who grew up in Kakuma and went on to represent the Refugee Olympic Team. Loroupe has cited his progression as an example of opportunities that can emerge from the camp.
The route from Kakuma through Lodwar and Kainuk, into West Pokot, Trans Nzoia and eventually Nairobi, passes through regions that have historically experienced pastoralist conflicts, competition over water and pasture, cattle rustling and insecurity.

The 28 refugees participating in the run are taking part directly in the campaign, alongside Loroupe, as the journey moves through communities with different cultures and histories en route to the capital.
The initiative comes as Kenya approaches an election period, with the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation’s peace-run campaign timed to promote peaceful coexistence across the regions it passes through. The journey is expected to conclude at Uhuru Park in Nairobi after the seven-day run.
