The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has thrown its weight behind Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Bomet County, demanding justice, fairness and transparency in an ongoing recruitment exercise being conducted by the county government.

KNUT Bomet Branch Executive Secretary Desmond Langat made the remarks during a gathering held on Monday morning, where he addressed grievances raised by ECDE teachers over the recruitment process and called for equal opportunities for all qualified candidates.

Langat commended Bomet Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok for intervening in the matter, noting that the Governor had engaged the County Public Service Board and urged it to consider the concerns raised by the affected teachers.

He further praised the Governor for showing commitment to employing ECDE teachers despite facing challenges and opposition from a section of the public, including legal hurdles surrounding the recruitment exercise.

“Good work, Governor Barchok, for standing with our teachers and championing fairness,” Langat said.

The KNUT official insisted that the concerns raised by the teachers should be addressed through a transparent process that safeguards the interests of qualified applicants and ensures recruitment is conducted strictly on merit.

Affected ECDE teachers have called for fairness in the selection process, saying qualified professionals should be given an equal opportunity to secure employment and serve children within their respective communities.

The union’s intervention comes amid mounting pressure for clarity in the county’s ECDE recruitment exercise, with teachers seeking assurance that the process will be conducted without discrimination or favouritism.

Langat urged relevant county authorities to listen to the teachers’ grievances and ensure the recruitment process upholds the principles of fairness, accountability and equal opportunity.

The teachers now await further action from the County Public Service Board as they continue pushing for a recruitment process they insist should be transparent, credible and fair to all qualified ECDE candidates.
