- Mark Lopetakou from Lityei village has secured admission to Kibabii University to study ICT, Mass Media and Communication after excelling in his KCSE examinations.
The road from Makutano town winds through Mathare before crossing River Tanga Tanga into Lityei village, where the homestead of the Lopetakou family sits framed by a clear view of Mount Elgon to the west.
It is here that Mark Lopetakou, a bright and ever-jovial young man, welcomes a visitor with a warm “Karibu mgeni” outside his family home. As his mother served hot porridge, “uji wa wimbi,” in traditional bowls, Mark settled in to share the story of his journey to university, a milestone that has stirred pride across the small village.
Beyond the homestead, Makutano town has also been undergoing visible transformation, with new modern buildings reshaping the area and residents increasingly engaged in both small and large-scale business activity, a backdrop that mirrors the sense of progress surrounding Mark’s own achievement.
Mark began his early education at Makutano Primary School before proceeding to St. Maurus High School in Kwanza, Trans Nzoia County.

His strong performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations secured him admission to Kibabii University in Western Kenya, where he will pursue a course in ICT, Mass Media and Communication, a field that has inspired admiration among young people in Lityei village.
To mark the occasion, the Lopetakou family organised a thanksgiving mass on Saturday, presided over by Fr. Ignatius Oroni, the assistant parish priest at Makutano Parish Catholic Church. In his address, Fr. Oroni urged young people to remain focused on their education as they pursue their studies, and commended Mark for his active involvement in the parish’s Youth Group. Fellow members of the group also praised him as a committed team player within the fellowship.
Following the mass, villagers in attendance contributed funds to support Mark’s travel to university, describing him as a hardworking and disciplined student deserving of the community’s support. Members of St. Teresa of Avila, Mark’s Small Christian Community, were also present to extend moral support to the family.
