The County Government of Busia has flagged off the Griffins Memorial Bikerthon, a 14-day cycling expedition from Busia to Mombasa, aimed at raising funds to educate needy students at Starehe Boys’ Centre while celebrating the legacy of the institution’s founder, Dr. Geoffrey Griffin.
Busia County officials led by County Secretary Oscar Juma, who is an alumnus of Starehe Boys’ Centre, officially flagged off the cyclists on Tuesday. The initiative seeks to honour Dr. Griffin’s contribution to education and mentorship, work that has transformed the lives of thousands of underprivileged learners across the country, while mobilising resources to sponsor the education of deserving boys at the institution.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Juma lauded the young cyclists for championing a cause that promotes equitable access to education, describing the ride as a demonstration of commitment to empowering future generations through learning. He reaffirmed the Busia County Government’s support for programmes that invest in youth development and education, and wished the team a safe and successful journey to Mombasa.

The send-off ceremony drew a range of county officials and stakeholders, including Chief Officer for Sports Saviour Panyako, Chief Officer for Transport Dennis Ngira, the Director of the Griffins Memorial Bikerthon, members of the Starehe Boys’ Centre Alumni–Busia Chapter, and staff from Starehe Boys’ Centre.
The Bikerthon is expected to traverse several counties before concluding in Mombasa, drawing public support for the education sponsorship initiative while keeping alive the legacy of Dr. Geoffrey Griffin through service and community engagement.
